Cop dies in road accident

Police said an unidentified four-wheeler running recklessly at high speed had hit the motorcycle which Ujjwal Bhattacharyya was riding

Ujjwal Bhattacharyya, 50, a sub-inspector of intelligence wing of Barrackpore police commissionerate, died in an accident on Kalyani Expressway while returning home late on Thursday night.

Police said an unidentified four-wheeler running recklessly at high speed had hit the motorcycle which Bhattacharyya was riding.

The accident occurred at Babanpur near Titagarh in North 24-Parganas. Bhattacharyya, a resident of Nawabganj in Ichhapur, suffered head injuries despite wearing a helmet. A mobile patrolling team of the police spotted Bhattacharyya lying on the road and rushed him to B.N. Bose subdivision hospital, where he was declared brought-dead.

Liquor seized

A team of Diamond Harbour district police led by subdivisional police officer Mitun De and Falta police officer in charge Avijit Hyte seized 8,000 litres of spurious liquor from the Machhghata area of Falta on Thursday night.

The seizure was made while the liquor was being dispatched on motorised boats on the Hooghly river. The police have arrested two persons — Mohan Chakraborty, 33 and Bivash Kayal, 37, both residents of Uluberia —, and seized five speed boats used for the transportation of the liquor.
