The entrance to 9A Short Street |
An officer of Shakespeare Sarani police station has been “closed” for alleged dereliction of duty following an attack on 9A Short Street in September.
A probe has been ordered against the officer-in-charge of the police station in connection with the incident.
Police sources said an internal inquiry has found Noor Ali, the second officer of the police station, guilty of favouritism. Ali probed the Monday morning twin murders at the property till the case was handed over to the detective department.
Ali had been asked to probe the September 15 bullet attack on 9A. “We have learnt that Ali had not acted impartially while conducting the probe,” said an officer at the police headquarters.
Sources familiar with the the investigation said Ali had maintained contacts with Parag Majmudar, who has been arrested in connection with Monday’s trespass on the property that led to the firing and the deaths.
“There was an allegation that on May 10 Ali had broken padlocks on rooms at 9B Short Street. The padlocks were put by owner Dwarkanath Sein,” said an officer. Mamta Agarwal, arrested for the firing, has accused Ali of not heeding her complaints, the officer said.
As a result of being “closed”, Ali will have to report daily to the division reserve office till further orders.
The order for probe against OC Piyus Kundu has been issued by police commissioner Surajit Kar Purkayastha. “The DC (south) will conduct the inquiry,” said an officer.
Being the head of the police station, the officer said, Kundu cannot skip his responsibility. “He should have taken proper measures after the September attack on the premises. He should have asked some other officer to probe the attack after Ali failed to discharge his duty,” the officer said.
