Cooch Behar: Villager gunned down over a plot of land

While policeman Surajit Mallick, was found hanging at his home in Jalpaiguri on Tuesday morning

A 45-year-old villager in Cooch Behar district was shot dead allegedly by one of his relatives on Tuesday afternoon over a plot of land.

Police recovered the body. Search is on to nab the accused.

Sources said victim Mominul Sarkar had a longstanding dispute over a piece of land with relative Bappa Hossain. Both would reside in East Shikarpur village under Nazirhat-I panchayat of Sahebganj police station.

During an altercation on Tuesday, Bappa allegedly took out a firearm and fired at Mominul. The bullet hit Mominul on his head and he died on the spot. As villagers ran to the spot, Bappa fled.

Cop found hanging

Policeman Surajit Mallick, 46, was found hanging at his home in Jalpaiguri on Tuesday morning. Sources said Mallick, a resident of Adarpara of the town, was working with Calcutta Police. He came home on leave on July 23 and was supposed to go back on July 30.

Police are waiting for his post mortem report.

Seizure

A team of Chanchal police of Malda district conducted a raid on Monday night and arrested two persons with melted opium, a material used to produce brown sugar. Those arrested are Jaharul Sheikh and Jamerul Haque, both from Jalalpur village.

“The cost of the seized item is around Rs 4 lakh,” said a source.
