Chief minister Mamata Banerjee has written to railway minister Piyush Goyal urging him to intervene in the construction of the superstructure of the Majerhat bridge over railway tracks.

The state government needs the clearance of the commissioner of railway safety to go ahead with the construction and complete the project by the end of December this year.

“I am told that the

target (December 31) is also likely to slip for lack of commissioner of railway safety clearance for construction

of superstructure over railway tracks passing through under the bridge… I would request for your personal intervention and to kindly issue instructions to Railway authorities for prompt approval,” Mamata wrote to Goyal on Monday.

The Majerhat bridge had collapsed in September last year leaving those commuting between the city and Behala, Thakurpukur and vast areas of South 24-Parganas in a spot.

The chief minister laid stress on completing the bridge on time, citing the forthcoming Gangasagar Mela to be held on Sagar Island in South 24-Parganas in mid-January.

The Eastern Railway spokesperson said he was unaware about Mamata’s letter.
