High Court asks Bengal government to submit affidavit on Covid situation

State Election Commission has been directed to give infrastructure details concerning four municipal corporation areas where polls are scheduled to be held on January 22

The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday directed the West Bengal government to submit an affidavit on the Covid-19 situation in the four municipal corporation areas where elections are scheduled to be held on January 22.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice Prakash Shrivastava and Justice Kesong Doma Bhutia also ordered the State Election Commission (SEC) to submit another affidavit giving details of the infrastructure for conducting the polls in Bidhannagar, Asansol, Chandannagar and Siliguri municipal corporations.

Hearing a PIL seeking postponement of the election in view of the rising cases of coronavirus in the state, the bench ordered for submission of the affidavits on Thursday.

The court asked the state government to provide in the affidavit the number of micro-containment zones and that of deaths due to COVID-19 in those four municipal corporation areas.
