Siliguri, March 28: Students of Siliguri Government Polytechnic College staged a demonstration and forced its closure today, alleging that the low marks they had scored in the exams were because of lack of facilities in the institution.
In another incident, an 18-year-old student of Darjeeling Polytechnic Institute in Kurseong, Sunny Mitra, went missing on Thursday. His father has filed a missing person’s diary.
Gangtok: An army jawan posted along the India-China border at Nathu-la, 14,400 feet above sea level, died after he fell from a cliff on the night of March 25. The body of Grenadier Sandeep (23) was recovered the next morning. The jawan had fallen 200ft below.
Gangtok: Health problems forced two members of Affected Citizens of Teesta (ACT) to withdraw the indefinite fast against hydel power projects in North Sikkim’s Dzongu. Tashi Namgyal Lepcha fell unconscious on Friday morning, the 19th day of the hunger strike, and had to be hospitalised. Tshering Ongden, who had joined the protest later, was also advised to end his fast.
Alipurduar: Kusum Lama of Kalchini Tea Estate in Alipurduar subdivision was bitten by a python on Friday morning. Kusum was first admitted to Latabari health centre and then shifted to Alipurduar hospital.
Siliguri: The Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC) will slap a spot fine of Rs 500 and Rs 50 on shop owners and individual users of plastics from May. The move aims to ban the use of plastic of thickness below 40 micron.
