Bodies found on rail tracks
• BARUIPUR: The severed bodies of a teenage girl and a youth in his early 20s were found on the railway tracks near Lakshmikantapur station in South 24-Parganas on Monday morning. The residents of the area spotted the bodies around 6am and alerted the stationmaster of Lakshmikantapur. Preliminary investigation by the government railway police revealed that the duo died around Sunday midnight and the two might have committed suicide. The victims are yet to be identified.
Uttarpara death
• UTTARPARA: The body of a 17-year-old boy was fished out from a waterbody in Makhla colony of Uttarpara, Hooghly, on Sunday morning. Police said Prakash Patekar, who was to appear for the Madhyamik examination in 2018, had been missing since Friday.
Man found dead
• BURRABAZAR: Sankha Nath, 36, who worked for an IT company in New Town, was found dead near Burrabazar ghat on Monday. He had been missing since December 6.
Accident
• HARE STREET: A 19-year-old biker lost control and skidded near Bhowanipore club tent on RR Avenue on Saturday night. Sheikh Zabbar Ali, a resident of Kamardanga in South 24-Parganas, was first taken to SSKM Hospital and then to Shambhu Nath Pandit Hospital for treatment, police said.
Sangeet Mela from Dec 23
• CALCUTTA: The state government will hold this year's Sangeet Mela from December 23 to 30. On Christmas Day and the last two days of the festival, artistes will perform from 9am at the various venues of the music festival, including Rabindra Sadan, Madhusudan Mancha, Sisir Mancha and Rabindra Okakura Bhavan. On all other days, the performances will begin at 5pm. According to officials of the state information and cultural affairs department, over 1,500 artistes will perform in the eight-day festival.
Bail rejected
CALCUTTA: The division bench of Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice Rajarshi Bharadwaj on Monday rejected the bail petition of Juhee Chowdhury, a former general secretary of the Bengal unit of BJP Mahila Morcha, arrested in connection with sale of infants from a home in Jalpaiguri. Juhee, 25, was the owner of the orphanage. The CID had arrested her in May.
Molest charge
• BONGAON: A man in his late 50s was arrested on Monday for allegedly molesting a five-year-old girl at Bhabanitala in Bongaon, North 24-Parganas. Police said the girl's mother had bought rice from the accused, who has a grocery shop in the area, and complained that it was of poor quality. The accused visited her house when she had gone out. The mother, who was nearby, heard her daughter crying and ran to the house, only to see the man running away. After the child narrated the incident to her mother, she alerted residents of the area and they beat up the accused before handing him over to police.
Coaches repaired
• LILUAH: Five coaches, recently refurbished at the Liluah workshop, will be put into service under the Howrah division on December 13. The coaches include old AC chair car, AC 3-tier, non-AC 3-tier and non-AC pantry car. The AC chair car will be used in short-distance trains like the Shantiniketan Express and the Coalfield Express, a railway official said.
Theft in Bandel
• BANDEL: A spectacles shop in Bandel was robbed and Rs 10,000 looted on Sunday night. The robbers also took away several sunglasses and spectacles. After looting the shop on the ground floor, the robbers went to the first floor of the building but failed to break open the lock on the gate.
Housewife found dead in Howrah
• HOWRAH: A young woman who had got married eight months ago was found dead in Bantra, Howrah, on Monday. Jharna Karar was found hanging from the ceiling of her room. Police said Jharna's parents had married her off after getting wind of her alleged relationship with a youth in their locality. She had allegedly refused to get married to the man chosen by her family and would often return to her parents' home, the police said.
Special train
• HOWRAH: A special train will run between Howrah and Sheoraphuli on Tuesday to commemorate 60 years of Eastern Railway's local train service. Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru had flagged off the first local train between the two stations on December 12, 1957, in the presence of the then railway minister Babu Jagjivan Ram and Bengal chief minister Bidhan Chandra Roy.
Gold bars seized
• CALCUTTA: Gold bars worth Rs 51 lakh were seized from three Calcutta-bound passengers at Imphal airport on Monday. The passengers had concealed the gold bars in their rectum, an airport official said. CISF officers detected the bars, each weighing 1.7kg, during security check at Imphal airport. The three accused were about to board a flight to Calcutta.
