Balurghat, Aug. 16: The block development officer of Harirampur who was arrested on Friday on the charges of defalcating over Rs 1 crore from the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme was produced before the special fast-track court here today. But Suman Majhi was sent back to jail and is scheduled to be produced before the additional chief judicial magistrate in Buniadpur on Wednesday.
Shankar Chakrabarty, the lawyer representing Majhi, opposed the production of the accused before the fast-track court, arguing that his client could not be tried at the special court, as police were yet to submit any chargesheet against him.
Majhi had been caught in Malda and handed over to South Dinajpur police the same day. On Saturday, the ACJM in Buniadpur remanded him in jail custody for two days.
Public prosecutor Gautam Das conceded that a case without a chargesheet could not be heard in the fast-track court. Fast-track court judge Bibek Pramanik ordered that Majhi be produced in Buniadpur on Wednesday.
