Sharat Singh (right) could push-start a bus but the 40-year-old never thought he would compete in the WAF 33rd World Armsport Championship 2013 in Punjab from November 21 to 25. It started as a ‘joke’ last year when the Calcutta-based transport operator took part in an inter-alumni arm-wrestling tournament organised by Alumnorum Societas (Alsoc). This ultimately led to his participation in the nationals. Now he is set to represent the country in the over-80kg category. ‘It’s not just about your weight (Singh weighs 83kg) but about your power and passion. When I hold my opponent’s arm, I know whether I will win or lose,’ said the St. Xavier’s school alumnus. Two others, 57-year-old Biswanath Yadav and 16-year-old Tanmoy Kundu from Bengal, had won medals at the Guwahati nationals in September. On Tuesday, Pradeep Guha Thakurta (left), a senior Alsoc member, organised a send-off for the trio. Picture by Sanat Kumar Sinha |
