The Trinamul Congress on Friday suspended Bijpur MLA Subhranshu Roy, son of BJP leader Mukul Roy, for six years for “making anti-party statements”.

The suspension came after Subhranshu had hailed his father’s organisational skills which led to the BJP’s impressive performance in Bengal, including Arjun Singh’s win in Barrackpore. Bijpur Assembly segment falls under the Barrackpore Lok Sabha constituency. Trinamul candidate Dinesh Trivedi trailed by a margin of over 7,000 votes in Bijpur, said sources.

Partha Chatterjee, the secretary general of Trinamul, said the party’s disciplinary body had decided to suspend Subhranshu after consulting chief minister Mamata Banerjee.

Earlier in the day Subhranshu had hailed his father Mukul Roy as the real Chanakya of Bengal politics. “I have no qualms in accepting that a son lost to his father. He is the real Chanakya of Bengal politics. Our party lost because people voted against us,” Subhrangshu told the media.

The Bijpur MLA could not be contacted over phone despite several attempts.
