Two bike-borne youths on Wednesday snatched a gold chain from a councillor’s wife in Kasba, barely a kilometre from where a woman was shot at for resisting snatchers less than two months ago.

Dipti Dey, wife of ward 91 CPM councillor Dipankar De, was walking down NK Ghosal Lane near Chittaranjan Girls’ School towards her home when she was targeted. The stretch is generally deserted after dusk.

“The two-wheeler stopped so close that I was scared I would be hit. One of the youths snatched the chain from my neck,” Dipti said. “The chain, which had a locket attached, would weigh around 30 gram.”

Dipankar was attending the house proceedings at the Calcutta Municipal Corporation (CMC) headquarters at the time. Dipti had skipped office on Tuesday to look after her ailing mother.

On January 24, a 37-year-old woman had suffered bullet injuries when she lunged at a bike carrying three youths who had tried to snatch her mangalsutra. Police are yet to track down the culprits.
