Behrampore, March 17: State Congress chief Adhir Chowhury's wife Arpita has expressed her wish to join Trinamul, providing a handle to baiters of her husband in his party to train guns on him.
Arpita called up Murshidabad Trinamul president Mannan Hossain this morning from her Behrampore home to express her desire to "serve the society under the able leadership of Mamata Banerjee".
Talking to reporters at Adhir's house, Chowdhury Villa, Arpita said: "I have been inspired by the ideals of Mamata Banerjee. I stay alone in this palatial building. I want to join Trinamul so that I can remain close to people. I shall have the privilege to serve the society. Trust me, I am serious."
Adhir, also the Congress MP from Behrampore, did not take calls.
A section of state Congress leaders opposed to Adhir was quick to cash in on Arpita's comments to target him. "We have nothing to say about the PCC chief's personal matters. But such things would cause embarrassment to the tottering organisation at a time we are struggling to boost the sagging morale of our party workers," a state Congress general secretary said.
