Chater was a student of La Martiniere Calcutta between 1856 and 1863 and helped the school later with Rs 11 lakh in two instalments. "La Martiniere gave him a home, hope, a family and an education. Chater gave La Martiniere Calcutta a gracious donation of Rs 11 lakh in 1924 and 1925 when the school was facing a severe financial crisis," said Reverend Ashoke Biswas, Bishop of Calcutta and president of the board of ex officio governors, La Martiniere Schools. "He was driven to donate to the school not only as a grateful graduate but also as a visionary who acknowledged the value of education... I call upon the students of La Martiniere to commit to knowledge. Such a commitment will be the best way to enhance Sir Catchick Paul Chater's legacy and bring special meaning to the prayer offered daily by the pupils of the school," said the ambassador.
