Alipurduar, Oct. 6: December 15 will be celebrated as World Tea Day.

The first edition of World Tea Day will be preceded by an international conference on tea in New Delhi to be attended by representatives of tea-producing countries, like Kenya, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Vietnam and members of different trade unions in India.

The decision was taken at a meeting at the office of the RSP labour wing UTUC at 17, Firoz Shah Road, New Delhi, yesterday. Members of the central committees of seven trade unions attended the meet.

MP of Alipurduar and UTUC central committee member Joachim Baxla, who attended yesterday?s meeting, said over the phone from Delhi that UTUC was acting on an idea first mooted at the World Social Forum held in Brazil this January.

In the lead up to December 15, a number of rallies and workshops on the problems faced by tea labourers would be organised at tea plantation areas, Baxla said.
