Holi is one of the most photogenic festivals in the world, a celebration of colour, movement and emotion, where clouds of gulal drift through the air and expressions shift from serenity to exhilaration in seconds. Capturing that atmosphere requires more than simply pointing and shooting. It demands speed, control over exposure and colour, and the ability to isolate moments within all the chaos.

The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max are built with precisely these conditions in mind. Each device features three 48MP Fusion cameras, delivering higher resolution and greater detail across focal lengths. The redesigned 48MP Telephoto camera, with its next-generation tetraprism design and sensor that is 56 per cent larger than before, improves sharpness in bright conditions and retains more detail in darker scenes. With 4x optical zoom at 100mm and 8x optical zoom at 200mm — the longest optical reach ever on an iPhone — users can move from intimate portraits to compressed, dramatic frames. The updated Photonic Engine further refines colour accuracy, reduces noise and preserves natural skin tones, all of which are critical during a festival where hues are intense and lighting unpredictable.

Professional photographer Chandan Khanna, who is continuously documenting life around him, advises beginning with light rather than colour. Shooting with backlighting, particularly in the early morning or late afternoon, can transform an ordinary frame into a cinematic one. Positioning the subject between the camera and the sun allows light to pass through the airborne powder, creating a luminous glow around colour clouds. On the iPhone 17 Pro models, tapping to focus on the face and slightly reducing the exposure helps retain depth and prevents highlights from blowing out. The larger sensors and improved image processing ensure that even under harsh sunlight, detail remains intact and colours do not tip into oversaturation.

Photographer Rohit Vohra recommends thinking in focal lengths rather than just moments. The ultra-wide 0.5x lens is ideal for establishing the atmosphere — crowded streets, colour-filled air and groups mid-celebration. Switching to 1x allows for more grounded street frames, while 2x is better suited for portraits that isolate expression amid the frenzy. Slightly underexposing by tapping on the screen and dragging the exposure down a touch can make colours appear richer and more dramatic, especially when powders are already intensely saturated.

Holi, however, is rarely still. Colour throws happen in an instant, and anticipation is more important than reaction. Swiping left on the shutter button and holding to activate Burst Mode dramatically increases the likelihood of freezing the precise moment when powder expands mid-air. With 48MP resolution, even after selecting the best frame, there is sufficient detail for cropping without degrading image quality. Vohra also suggests keeping Live mode on; in chaotic situations it is easy to miss the exact split second you intended to capture, and Live Photos allow you to revisit adjacent frames and choose the strongest expression or most dynamic burst of colour.

In fast-moving environments, practical handling becomes just as important as technique. Holi colours quickly coat lenses and screens. Carrying a microfibre cloth in a sealed zip-lock bag and wiping the lens regularly can prevent haze and colour cast.

When fingers or the display are wet, using the camera control button or the volume up or down buttons to trigger the shutter offers more reliability than tapping the screen.

For portraits, optical zoom remains preferable to digital magnification. The 4x and 8x optical options allow photographers to isolate faces from busy backgrounds and compress swirling colour clouds for a more dramatic effect. The larger Telephoto sensor contributes to sharper images in bright outdoor conditions, while maintaining depth and separation. Locking focus and exposure by tapping and holding on the subject to enable AE/AF Lock prevents the camera from continuously readjusting as brightness shifts and people move unpredictably. Slightly lowering exposure helps maintain natural skin tones and prevents vibrant powders from appearing washed out.

Capturing emotion in motion

Beyond spectacle, Holi photography is about emotion. The improved colour science in the iPhone 17 Pro models ensures that even when faces are heavily coated in bright pigments, detail in the eyes and contours remains clear.

Video plays an equally important role in conveying the festival’s energy. Holi moments are chaotic and fast, and Vohra recommends shooting slow motion in 4K at 120 frames per second for high resolution and smoother playback. The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max support 4K at 120fps with Dolby Vision HDR, allowing colour clouds to unfold in dramatic detail. Cinematic mode can be used for more aesthetic, shallow-depth storytelling sequences, while Action mode is better suited when moving alongside subjects through dense crowds.

For advanced creators, support for ProRes Log, Log 2 and ProRes RAW provides additional flexibility in post-production. Genlock compatibility enables precise synchronisation across multiple cameras, reducing the need for manual alignment. The Centre Stage front camera, offering a wider field of view and higher resolution, also enables ultra-stabilised 4K HDR video and Dual Capture, allowing simultaneous recording from front and rear cameras.

Finally, practical considerations matter. Holi is typically celebrated under intense sunlight, and the Super Retina XDR display, reaching up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness, improves visibility when composing shots. Ceramic Shield 2 protection on both front and back enhances durability in an environment where movement is constant and devices are exposed to powder and accidental knocks.

Technology alone does not create memorable photographs. The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max provide high resolution, focal flexibility and colour fidelity. The decisive factors remain anticipation, positioning and sensitivity to emotion. By working with the light, slightly underexposing for richness, choosing the right focal length for the scene, and preparing for the chaos rather than reacting to it, photographers can ensure that their Holi images capture not just colour, but atmosphere and authenticity.
