Apple has made the distinction between MacBook Air and MacBook Pro clear. The new MacBook Pro with M5 Pro now starts at 1TB instead of 512GB.
The company has announced new 14-inch and 16-inch versions of its MacBook Pro, powered by the latest M5 Pro and M5 Max processors. The updated models focus on higher performance, particularly for artificial intelligence (AI) workloads, alongside faster storage, improved wireless connectivity and extended battery life.
The company says the new chips deliver up to four times the AI performance of the previous generation and up to eight times that of models based on the M1 series. The machines are aimed at developers, researchers and creative professionals who run demanding applications locally rather than relying solely on cloud services.
Pre-orders have started, with availability from March 11. The new models will be offered in space black and silver.
The M5 Pro and M5 Max are built on what Apple calls a new ‘Fusion Architecture’, combining two dies into a single system on a chip. Both processors feature up to an 18-core CPU, including six high-performance cores and 12 additional performance cores designed for multithreaded workloads.
A redesigned GPU includes a Neural Accelerator in each core, intended to speed up AI-related tasks. According to Apple’s figures, the M5 Pro and M5 Max can deliver up to four times faster large language model (LLM) prompt processing than their immediate predecessors, and significantly faster AI image generation compared with earlier M1-based models.
The M5 Pro supports up to 64GB of unified memory with bandwidth of up to 307GB/s, while the M5 Max supports up to 128GB with bandwidth of up to 614GB/s. Apple says this higher bandwidth is designed to handle complex tasks such as AI model training and large-scale video editing projects.
Storage now starts at 1TB for M5 Pro models and 2TB for M5 Max configurations.
Battery life is rated at up to 24 hours, depending on usage. A new Apple-designed N1 wireless chip adds support for Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. The laptops include three Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI with support for up to 8K resolution, an SDXC card slot and MagSafe 3 charging. The M5 Pro models can drive up to two external high-resolution displays, while the M5 Max versions support up to four.
The 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro starts at ₹249,900 and ₹232,900 for education; and the 16‑inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro starts at ₹299,900 and ₹277,900 for education.
The 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M5 Max starts at ₹399,900 and ₹366,900 for education; and the 16‑inch MacBook Pro with M5 Max starts at ₹429,900 and ₹394,900 for education. All models are available in space black and silver.
The 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 now comes standard with 1TB of storage, and is available in space black and silver, starting at ₹189,900 and ₹178,900 for education.
