Actor Naveen Kasturia — who has proved his versatility on both screens big and small — plays a daring undercover operative in the 1970s for India’s Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) in Salakaar, now streaming on JioHotstar. A t2 chat.

What has been the response to Salakaar so far — both in general and to your portrayal in particular?

The response has been very encouraging. Just a couple of days ago, we got the (viewership) numbers and people are really watching the show. A lot of friends and audience members have reached out with kind words. Many said they enjoyed seeing me in a completely different part and even found me convincing in action sequences — that feedback made me really happy.

What were the primary reasons for you to want to do this series?

The part itself was fascinating. The story is set in the 1970s, about a spy in Pakistan trying to stop them from making a nuclear bomb. When I first heard just a few lines about it, I immediately said ‘yes’. As an actor, you always want to enter different worlds, and this one was new for me. The character and the setting were the real pull.

Apart from what was in the script, what kind of prep did you do on your own to get into such a complex character?

I usually stick closely to the script. The makers, writers and directors had done thorough research already, so I relied on their groundwork. My job was to fully internalise my lines and surrender to the director’s vision. I did, however, train physically — especially for the action sequences. Action rehearsals were new for me, and I really enjoyed that aspect of preparation.

If you had to describe your character Adhir Dayal in a sentence, what would it be?

A man with immense loyalty, commitment and love for his nation.

You have had an promising career so far with several standout performances. Is there any one project that you would call a turning point?

There have been a few — Sulemani Keeda, Pitchers and Aspirants. Each of them marked important turning points in my journey and helped audiences and the industry see me in a new light.

The OTT boom has been a boon, but now we hear of market forces influencing content choices. What is your take?

Honestly, I think producers are the right people to answer this because they have to make those tough calls. I choose projects based on their creative potential and personal connection, rather than just their commercial prospects. I simply go by whether I like the story and whether I will enjoy being a part of it. Producers, of course, have to think differently... about the commerce aspect as well.

What are you working on now?

I am starting a new show in September, which should come out by mid next year. I can’t reveal much right now since the channel will make the official announcement. I have also wrapped up Aspirants 3, which should release by the end of this year.

Anything you watched recently — film or series — that really impressed you?

I recently watched The Seed of the Sacred Fig (2024, Iran). It really stayed with me, especially the way it ended — I was quite shaken. My wife and I were still discussing it just before this interview. It is a film that left a deep impression on me.
