A couple travelling on a motorcycle were injured after a truck hit the two-wheeler on Diamond Harbour Road near Manton crossing on Thursday afternoon. Nirmal Haldar, 32, and his wife Runa Mullick, 28, residents of Haridevpur, have been admitted to SSKM Hospital with multiple injuries. Police said both were wearing helmets. The truck was seized but the driver fled, police said.

Body found

The body of a 45-year-old woman was found hanging from the ceiling of a ground-floor room of her house on Mahendra Banerjee Road in the Parnasree area on Thursday morning. Malati Dutta was taken to Vidyasagar State General Hospital, where she was declared dead. No suicide note was found, police said.

Youth missing

A 19-year-old boy jumped into the Hooghly from a launch on Wednesday evening. Police said the incident happened between Ahiritola Ghat and Bandha Ghat. The youth has been identified as Tuhin Subhra Das, a resident of Howrah. Tuhin could not be traced till late on Thursday, an officer said.

Two barred from HS paper

The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education did not allow two candidates to write the first language test on Thursday as they entered the hall with mobile phones. Council president Mahua Das said the exam on Day 1 was held peacefully. There were allegations from some districts that police had frisked candidates. The council had earlier announced that examinees could not be frisked. The chief invigilator and the “special council nominees” can use metal detectors and mobile detectors to check whether anyone has a phone on him or her. An official of the council said they would look into the allegations.

Fake profile cuffs

A Madhyamik examinee was arrested in West Midnapore on Thursday for allegedly creating a fake Facebook profile of a medical student and trying to extort Rs 10 lakh from her. The case was started based on the complaint of the woman who had befriended the accused on the social network but later blocked him, police said. The accused then allegedly created the fake profile and introduced the woman as an escort.

Palta water plant launched

Mayor Firhad Hakim inaugurated a 200 million gallon per day (MGD) water treatment plant, built by the Calcutta Municipal Corporation, at Palta on Thursday.

Hospital fire

Smoke was seen coming out of an AC machine on the third floor of the emergency building of RG Kar hospital on Thursday afternoon. The plastic cover of the AC machine had caught fire after sparks from welding work on the floor above fell on it, police said. No one was injured.
