Unidentified persons hurled bombs at the home of a professor of Serampore College in Naihati late on Friday night with his daughter suspecting that her anti-CAA posts on social media triggered the attack.

On the basis of a complaint lodged by 56-year-old English professor Nilanjan Chatterjee, Naihati police began a probe on Saturday.

Sources said the attackers had pulled up to Chatterjee’s two-storey home in Bijoynagar on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday and hurled bombs at the windows of a first-floor room. Several glass panes and the surrounding wall were damaged.

Asked about social media posts by his daughter Srotosvini, a teacher at an English-medium school, Chatterjee said such a motive beggars belief. “It is difficult to believe that a Facebook post could have led to this,” said Chatterjee.

Srotosvini, 25, however, said: “I now suspect my posts might have angered the people who were capable of such an attack.”

Srotosvini, who is also a poet, said she had been critical of the BJP government’s amended citizenship law. “But to think that my home could be attacked for that is deeply upsetting,” she said.

Leaders of different parties, including those of the BJP, visited the professor’s home on Sunday.
