The division bench of Justice K.J. Sengupta and Justice Joymalya Bagchi granted anticipatory bail to Mahendra Soni, Shrikant Mohta, Vishnukant Mohta and Jivandas Mohta, directors of Shree Venkatesh Films, on Wednesday.

The four were apprehending arrest in connection with a criminal case lodged against them by Brand Value Corporation (BVC), a sister concern of TV channel Rupashi Bangla, alleging that they had violated an agreement between the two companies.

Under the agreement, Shree Venkatesh was to provide 70 films to Rupashi Bangla against a payment of Rs 25 crore. “BVC had paid the amount but Shree Venkatesh had provided only 37 films,” said the initial complaint. The company also claimed that two of its employees, Kranti Kumar and Satyajit Saha, were involved in “the conspiracy”.

The Barasat court had issued warrants in the name of the four directors and the two BVC employees. The two had been arrested while the directors had moved the high court seeking anticipatory bail.

“The court said such a matter could not be a criminal case. It’s a civil dispute and granted all the directors anticipatory bail,” said lawyer Rajdeep Mazumder, representing Shree Venkatesh.
