Tripura Youth Congress workers and supporters on Friday took out an aakrosh (anger) rally here against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), National Register of Citizens (NRC) and National Population Register (NPR), chanting slogans like “Modi hatao, desh bachao (remove Modi, save country)”.

AICC joint secretary and Youth Congress in-charge Krishna Allavaru said, “The central and state governments should focus on issues like unemployment, price rise, corruption and poverty, which are increasing daily. We don’t want them to talk about ‘ridiculous issues’ like NPR, NRC and CAA. The Centre and state government should focus on people’s issues, not ‘idhar udhar ki’ issues.”

“The real issue is unemployment, the highest in 45 years. In Tripura, the rate of unemployment is 30 per cent. Instead of solving this problem, the government is talking about other issues,” he said.

Allavaru said the BJP government, before coming to power in the state, had promised 50,000 jobs but did not create a single one. “They are only talking about paan ki dukan (paan shop), pakoda ki dukan (fritters shop) and gaay (cow),” he alleged.

“We want jobs, we want price rise to be controlled. The National Register of Unemployed (NRU) is more important than NRC, CAA and NPR. We want the central and the state governments to prepare an NRU, not NRC,” Allavaru said. Thousands of supporters and workers of Tripura PCC, Youth Congress and Mahila Congress joined the rally.

AICC general secretary K.C. Venugopal congratulated the Youth Congress for holding a rally against the “anti-people and anti-constitutional policies of Modi government”.

“Our great country is standing at a crucial juncture. On the one hand, it is facing unprecedented economic crisis, skyrocketing prices of essential commodities, alarming rate of unemployment, collapsing banking system and distress in all sectors of the economy. On the other, the soul of our country, the Constitution, secular values, unity in diversity and freedom of expression are threatened by the BJP government at the Centre and states.”

Venugopal could not attend the rally owing to engagements and meetings.
