The Assam unit of the BJP on Wednesday announced that it would contest 13 out of 14 Lok Sabha constituencies in the state.

“The party will not field any candidate in the Kokrajhar constituency where our ally Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) will contest. Apart from that, we will be contesting in all the 13 seats and the party is very confident about its victory,” state BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Dass told the media here on Wednesday.

The BJP currently has seven Lok Sabha seats in Assam. The Congress and the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) have three seats each. The Kokrajhar seat is occupied by Naba Sarania, an Independent MP.

Though the BJP has not released its list of candidates, Dass had earlier hinted that no incumbent MLA would contest. The Congress has received 134 nominations which are being scrutinised.

At least 300 youths officially joined the BJP at its headquarters in Hengerabari here on Wednesday. Dass said: “Everyday, youths are joining the BJP because they have realised that our party has a mission. Like our army we believe in patriotism and discipline.”
