Anti-Citizenship Amendment Act activist Sharjeel Imam was brought to the city on Thursday evening in connection with a sedition case registered by Assam police. Though he was supposed to reach in the afternoon, a train delay pushed back his arrival.

Several ABVP activists shouted slogans against Sharjeel outside Guwahati railway station. After conducting a health check-up, he was produced in a local court here. Sources said the crime branch sought his police remand.

On January 25, the crime branch registered a case against Imam and slapped him with various charges, including sedition, prompting enmity between different groups on ground of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc and abetting unlawful activity. Imam, a former JNU student, allegedly made a provocative statement asking the anti-CAA protesters in Delhi to ‘cut’ Assam from the rest of India.

Later, Delhi police arrested him from Bihar's Jehanabad on January 28.

Following his arrest, a team of state police landed in Delhi to get his custody and subsequently, on February 13, a local court in New Delhi directed the Tihar jail authority to do the needful to produce him in Guwahati.
