Jamshedpur: A three-year-old boy died after accidentally falling inside a 5-feet-deep uncovered drain in Golmuri under Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) on Monday afternoon, prompting a probe by the civic body.

The deceased was identified as Ashish, son of vegetable seller Ramu Sao, a resident of New Tata Line in Deven Bagan area, Golmuri. Ashish was playing alone near the open drain, barely 80 metres from home and 150 metres from socio-cultural outfit Utkal Samaj, when he slipped.

Though he was brought out within 30 minutes and rushed to Tinplate Hospital, 2km from the spot, doctors declared him brought dead, Golmuri OC Amish Hussain said. The combined impact of injury, swallowing drain water and being swept away for 100 metres inside the drain proved fatal.

"The body was sent for post-mortem after which it was handed over to the family for last rites," OC Hussain said.

District BJP president Dinesh Kumar Sahu said the drain should be covered.

JNAC began a probe into why the drain was open. "We have made a committee led by city manager Shakil Mehendi to find out the contractor of the drain and why it was not covered. We will take action against the contractor and get the drain covered at the earliest," said JNAC special officer Sanjay Kumar Pandey.
