Mango wore a dirty look on Saturday following a strike by MNAC staff to protest against the assault on an assistant engineer during an anti-encroachment drive near Dimna Chowk on Friday.
Employees of the civic body turned up with black badges on their sleeves, but did not undertake the regular cleaning of streets or collection and disposal of municipal garbage.
The protesters, including Mango Notified Area Committee special officer Rajendra Gupta, met East Singhbhum DC Amit Kumar and SSP Anoop Birtharay demanding the arrest of those involved in the attack on assistant engineer Alok Ranjan.
Gupta confirmed about the token protest, resulting in the suspension of cleaning work.
“The cleaning work was affected as the staff were protesting against the assault on a senior employee. We have been assured that the accused will be arrested soon,” Gupta told The Telegraph.
He said Ranjan was assaulted by builders Bhanu Pratap Sahi and his son Rakesh during an anti-encroachment drive near Suman Hotel along Dimna Road.
Both are residents of the locality.
“Ranjan was supervising the laying of concrete blocks on a stretch of government land. As the workers started levelling the spot, both Bhanu Pratap and his son turned up and assaulted Ranjan, forcing him to stop work midway,” the special officer said.
Gupta said the accused had claimed that they used to park their car on that plot of land where the levelling work was being conducted.
Ranjan had lodged an FIR with MGM thana on Friday.
Significantly, the staff of Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee also sported black badges on Saturday to express solidarity with their MNAC counterparts.
City SP Prabhat Kumar had visited the spot on Saturday.
“The complaint is being probed and the accused will be arrested after the investigation gets complete,” Kumar said.
