Several areas serviced by Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam (JBVNL), including Mango, Jugsalai and Chhota Govindpur, on Thursday faced power crisis due to technical snags and installation work of new power infrastructure.

Over a lakh residents of Mango experienced erratic power supply since morning due to breakdown of a power substation at Kuar Basti. The substation supplies power to Zakirnagar feeder. There was no power from 10am to 3pm in places like Zakirnagar, Daiguttu, the area around Payal Cinema and Post Office Road.

The power crisis in turn affected the water supply in several apartments that do not have generators. “I could not take bath as there was no water. We could not pump water to the overhead tank in the absence of power,” said Sukumar Ganguly, a resident of Post Office Road.

Power played hide and seek in Jugsalai from early morning. Power supply was disrupted in several pockets of the densely populated municipality area from 10.30am and resumed only around 2pm.

A JBVNL official posted at Mango said power supply had to be restricted in residential areas due to installation and charging of a new transformer. “The new transformer will help in reducing power cuts in Jugsalai,” he added.

Residents of Chhota Govindpur witnessed prolonged power cuts for eight hours from 9am. JBVNL officials said installation work of an electricity pole, carrying high tension line, resulted in the power cut. “Several old wires were replace with the new ones during the power cut,” said junior engineer S. Mahto.

Other areas that experienced power cuts were Shiv Mandir Road, Kalyan Nagar and Bhojpur Colony.
