The new complex of Dhanbad railway station, developed more than three months ago at a cost of Rs 4.5 crore, is out of bounds for most passengers.
Reason: the district administration is yet to revamp the approach road to the new complex, which comprises a large waiting hall, an enquiry counter, an unreserved ticket window, a catering complex and a portico.
The complex was inaugurated by general manager of East Central Railway, Hazipur, Madhuresh Kumar during his visit to the district on February 23.
As a long-term plan, the district authorities had planned to develop the approach road along the unused Jharia railway line. For the time being, it was decided that the Purana Bazaar Road would be developed for passenger use. But, none of these two plans seem to be anywhere close to realisation.
The Purana Bazaar Road is so congested, thanks to encroachment, that even two wheelers struggle to negotiate through the artery during daytime.
Similarly, encroachment issues are impeding the tender process for the plan to develop the approach road along the Jharia railway line.
East Central Railway’s senior divisional commercial manager in Dhanbad Dayanand stressed that they had completed their share of the work.
“We have readied infrastructure from our side so that passengers coming from places like Jharia, Joraphatak, Bastacola and Sindri can reach the railway station without having to cross the busy Bank More overbridge. It is now upto the administration to develop an approach road for their convenience,” the official said.
ADM (law and order) B.P.L. Das, when confronted with questions on the matter, chose to pass the buck.
“The railway authorities had assured us that land would be cleared of encroachment so that the approach road could be built. As soon as they do so, we shall begin work,” he said.
Sources from Dhanbad district administration also pointed out that they were yet to receive a waiver on supervision charges for working on railway land.
The new complex offers entry to platform No. 7 of the Dhanbad station where a number of trains, including the Dhanbad-Alapuzzah Express, the Vananchal Express, the Maurya Express and the Dhanbad Ranchi Intercity Express halt.
