Jamshedpur: A three-member team from the Medical Council of India (MCI) on Tuesday inspected state-run MGM Medical College and Hospital in Sakchi and Dimna to assess if the institution was ready to start PG courses from the next academic session.

Team leader Dr Gangadhar Gouda from Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences, Hubli, reached the medical college in Dimna, Mango, around 9.30am and checked records of professors, assistant professors and non-teaching staff. He also toured the auditorium, classrooms, library and other infrastructure till 5pm.

His team members, on the other hand, inspected the medical college and hospital in Sakchi, 7km away, from 10.30am. They visited the ICU, pathology wing and diagnostics section, and also examined the registers for teaching faculty, nurses and paramedics.

"The team stayed at the hospital (in Sakchi) for nearly two hours (till 12.30pm). Besides reviewing infrastructure, it checked faculty numbers and qualification. It suggested improvements on cleanliness front," said MGM hospital superintendent Dr S.N. Jha.

Medical college principal Dr A.C. Akhauri said the MCI visit was for verification of the compliance report submitted by the cradle to the Union health ministry in July.

"We had applied for permission to start PG courses in 11 subjects from the next academic session. A series of MCI team visits have happened since. Inspections for four subjects were pending. We submitted the compliance report on three - gynaecology and obstetrics, surgery and medicine - last month. The MCI sent a team for inspection," he said.

The med school has sought permission for PG courses (MS/MD) in orthopaedics, anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, biochemistry, pathology, microbiology, gynaecology and obstetrics, surgery, medicine and anaesthesia.

The team refused to speak to the media, saying they would submit a report to the MCI.
