The civic body has purchased 200 rickshaw carts for collection of garbage from each household in all the 55 wards and transporting it to the nearest dumping sites.

Dhanbad Municipal Corporation city manager Vijay Kumar on Wednesday said, “We had around 200 rickshaw carts till date. With the arrival of 200 more, door-to-door garbage collection will get a boost. We will allot the carts for different wards in all the five wards - Jharia, Dhanbad, Sindri, Katras and Chatatand - in a day or two.”

Kumar said, “Six to seven carts will be allotted for each of the 13 densely populated wards of Dhanbad and three to four carts in other wards of Sindri, Jharia, Katras and Chatatand.”

“With the arrival of the new carts, the door-to-door collection of garbage, which was being carried out in 15 wards, can now be extended to all the 55 wards,” said Kumar, adding that the dune bin-fitted carts would also help in separate collection of dry and wet waste as the focus of Swachh Survekshan 2019 scheduled in January will be on segregation of waste.

The small size of the dune bins will help the carts enter narrow and congested lanes.

The DMC, meanwhile, on Wednesday floated tenders for procuring over 400 pole-mounted bins of 100-litre capacity each which will be placed in all the 55 wards. “All the bins will be GPS-enabled to help authorities monitor their locations when those are removed for garbage clearance,” said Kumar.
