Kozhikode: The body of a 17-year-old sports trainee was found hanging from the ceiling of her hostel room, on Tuesday, inside Wayanad District Sports Council women's hostel, at Kalpetta in Wayanad district, according to the police.
Resanamol, a native of Cherpuzha in Kannur district, was found hanging in her room by her roommate around 11.30 am. She immediately informed the warden.
Police broke open the door of the room and recovered the body, Kalpetta sub-inspector Raman Unni said.
The girl, reportedly, had a mobile phone with her and her teammates saw it while they were returning to the hostel after training. Asked how she got it, she allegedly gave conflicting replies and the warden was informed about the matter.
The warden, failing to get a satisfactory reply from Resanamol, informed the girl's mother. A little later the girl was found hanging, Unni said. The body has been sent for post-mortem to the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital, Unni added.
The incident brought back memories of four female athletes, who tried to commit suicide at the SAI hostel in Alleppey, in May.
One of them, later, died in hospital. Police in Alappuzha said they had recovered a "note signed by the four" which said they were committing suicide after being "scolded" by their seniors for a "silly fault".
The dead athlete was identified as Aparna Ramabhadra, from Aryad in Alappuzha, who had participated as a rower in several national competitions. The other three, all 16-year-olds, were identified as Treesa Jacob, Sabitha Santosh and Shilpa K R. Treesa, who won gold in kayaking at the National Games in Kerala.
Police said all four were undergoing training at the SAI Water Sports Centre in Alappuzha, and were hospitalised. Aparna died the very next day.
