Calcutta: The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) are on a roll. They have won three consecutive matches, and much of the credit should go to their foreign recruits. But the team’s Indian players have struggled to find their feet.
However, captain Daniel Vettori said he is not worried about the form of the Indian players.
The following are excerpts
On his injury
I pulled my hamstring in the match against Rajasthan Royals. But there is no need to worry. I’m pretty confident of playing Saturday’s match.
Finding the right balance in the team
Selection of the team in this form of the game is really a difficult task because there are so many good players in your side. You never run out of options. But sometimes you have to leave out somebody who deserved to be in the team to get the balance right.
On Muttiah Muralidharan not being able to find a place in the playing XI
It’s incredibly difficult as well... He did a good job in the games which he played for us. We are just trying to find the right balance.
Performance of the overseas players
When you can only play four overseas players, it is important to pick the right player in the team. The selection the overseas players depends on a lot of factors. So far, I am very happy with the performance of our overseas players. Particularly in the last few games, (Tillekaratne) Dilshan, (Chris) Gayle and AB (de Villiers) have proved themselves and led us to comprehensive victories.
But I do back the Indian players too. They are all match-winners and can come good on any day.
The Gayle factor
Chris likes to play the way he wants... We can understand he likes to get himself in for five-six balls. Once he is settled, he is prepared to attack. He did that last year. He is a quality player. He knows his game inside out. Hopefully we can give him the confidence and freedom to go at it.
Whether Virat Kohli’s form is a concern
Virat might not have got the runs the way he would have liked to… But he gives everything on the field. He takes great catches. He tries hard and we know a good innings is not far away. Any player can go through such a phase. But I’m sure he would be back.
If he is happy with Zaheer Khan’s performance
I’m very happy with the way Zaheer has bowled. He has delivered for us... He has bowled well upfront and at the death overs. He just gets better and stronger with every game he plays. He has led the bowling and has been an inspiration for the younger Indian bowlers like Harshal Patel and R Vinay Kumar. He guides them… So it’s been a real help for me.
On Eden Gardens pitch
I think the pitch would be slow and the balls will turn a little on the strip. We expect it to behave in the same way it had done for the last few matches. Probably, it’s not the easiest wicket for the batsmen to play their strokes. But you have to adjust. Any team that hopes to win the IPL has to do well in all conditions.
