Calcutta: It’s not official as yet, but a well-placed source of The Telegraph has revealed that the 2012 edition of the CLT20 will be held in South Africa, in October, just days after the September 18-October 7 World T20 in Sri Lanka.
“The people who matter met in Kuala Lumpur on Monday and it has been decided to move the event out of India, as there are fears of weather-influenced disruptions at more than one venue, including Calcutta,” the well-placed source said, speaking from Malaysia’s capital.
Kuala Lumpur is hosting the International Cricket Council’s annual conference week.
Three teams from India — the Kolkata Knight Riders (IPL-V champions), the Chennai Super Kings and the Delhi DareDevils — have directly qualified. The Mumbai Indians may also be seen in action.
The Mumbai Indians finished fourth in the last IPL, but are the CLT20 holders.
Besides the three/four teams from India, the national T20 champions and runners-up of Australia and South Africa will feature in the competition.
But that’s not all.
As the CLT20 is supposed to be a 10-team affair, the remaining slots will be filled by qualifiers.
The Sialkot Stallions (Pakistan) have been invited for the qualifying stage, together with the national champions of England, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and the West Indies.
Of the previous three editions of the CLT20, one (in 2010) was held in South Africa, with India staging the other two.
The inaugural edition, in 2008, the IPL’s inaugural year, was scrapped following the 26/11 attack on Mumbai.
