Calcutta: Former Bengal all-rounder Kalyan Mitter passed away early Friday morning. He was 79 and suffering from leukaemia.
Mitter played 51 first-class matches for Bengal and Bihar in a career spanning from 1953 to 1969. An attacking right-hand batsman and off-spinner, he scored 1,698 runs and took 50 wickets.
Mitter played in two Ranji Trophy finals — 1955-56 and 1958-59. He also coached Bengal for two seasons — 1992-1993 and 1993-94. In the second occasion, Bengal reached the final but lost to Mumbai. He also served as Eden curator.
