Beighton Cup
Canara Bank trounced Police AC 8-2 in a match of 119th Beighton Cup hockey meet. KM Somanna was the star for the winners, scoring four goals. JP Kusha got two goals, while Dinesh Kiran and John Verghese scored one each.
In the other match of the day, CESC SC were shocked by Howrah Union 6-4 via a penalty shootout. The match was locked 3-3 after regulation time. Howrah Union’s Gurpreet Singh hit three goals.
Chess tourney
Hemant Ram of Tamil Nadu outplayed statemate S. Jayakumar via tie-breaker to win the National Amateur Chess Championship, at the Town Hall, on Saturday. Rajarishi Karthi finished third in the men’s event.
In the women’s category, Chandreyee Hazra of Bengal finished ahead of statemate Pallabi Roy and Odisha’s Aparajita Gochhikar.
