CAB to name Mitra successor on Oct. 1

The new joint secretary of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), who will replace late Arun Mitra, will be decided at a Special General Meeting (SGM) scheduled on October 1. As of now, former assistant secretary Naresh Ojha is the favourite for the post although some members want senior official Prabir Chakraborty.

It has been learnt that most of the senior members including president Jagmohan Dalmiya want Ojha, who is a former cricketer and did really well as an assistant secretary.

Till now, the members are not aware of what the two former joint secretaries — Gautam Dasgupta and Chitrak Mitra — feel about the choice of joint secretary. Once the duo, express their opinion, a final decision will be taken in this regard.

Transfers

A total of 407 cricketers signed for various clubs on the first day of the CAB inter-club transfers. Mohun Bagan were able to retain the services of Sanjib Sanyal, Arindam Ghosh, Subhamoy Das, Anushtup Mazumdar, Bunty Gwala, Abhijit Sikdar, and Syed Akhlakh Ahmed.

Off-spinner with suspect action Priyankar Mukherjee who donned East Bengal colours last season along with youngsters Avilin Ghosh and Mohammed Sami Ahmed also signed for the green-and-maroons. Veteran pacer Shib Shankar Paul and Bengal discard Kamal Hassan Mondal signed for Shambazar Club.

Bengal U-22 pacer Mohammed Ashrafuddin and Amitava Chakraborty signed in favour of East Bengal. The Town Club on the day roped in Sayan Sekhar Mondal, Arnab Nandy and Pinaki Ghosh.

Squash meet

Yash Jalan beat Prabhav Rajgharia 11-1, 11-0, 11-1 in the boys’ U-11 event at the East Zone Inter-School Squash Tournament being held at the Calcutta Racket Club. In another match, Aryaman Murarka defeated Devansh Nayar 11-2, 11-2, 11-5 in another match.

Rugby tourney

Kolkata Police blanked hosts Calcutta Cricket and Football Club (CC&FC) 22-0 to storm into the loser’s plate final of the 77th All India Rugby Tournament. They will take on Jungle Crows in the final on Saturday. Mohammed Saidul had three tries while Sheikh Moidul had one conversion in Kolkata Police’s thumping win.
