New Delhi: Kirti Azad, on Sunday, came out all guns blazing against the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) alleging that the local association had given contracts to "14 fake companies", which allowed a group of officials to make money to the tune of Rs 87 crore.

Addressing a press conference, Azad, a BJP member of Parliament and a member of the 1983 Indian World Cup winning team, played a 28-minute video and claimed that all the 14 companies were registered under false addresses.

The video, produced by a whistleblower website, wikileak4india.com, showed how their reporters went around the capital to trace the addresses but failed to contact any official of those companies. Azad, who was accompanied by former India captain Bishan Singh Bedi, alleged a section of the DDCA officials were deeply involved in the scam and had made huge money over the years. While Azad called the DDCA as the legalised institute of corruption, the Delhi government also made their intentions clear by setting up a commission of enquiry.

Late on Sunday, the DDCA came out with a weak rejoinder with their tainted president Sneh Prakash Bansal denying all the allegations in a rather unconvincing manner.

Interestingly, Azad, who made a vicious attack on the functioning of the DDCA and said its officials were protected by the high and mighty in the government, stopped short of making any reference to Union finance minister, Arun Jaitley, who was the president of the DDCA for 13 years till 2013. "This is not a fight between two individuals. It is a battle against corruption in the capital's cricket body, which I represented as a cricketer for many years," said Azad.

"The issue was politicalised after a new political party took up the matter. But I have been fighting against the irregularities in the DDCA for the past nine years. So don't drag me into politics," retorted Azad.

Bedi, who chose to remain silent for most part of the conference, said he was fighting a cricketing battle. "I urge you not to politicalise it... Think of the young cricketers, who are being wronged and cheated by the corrupt and dishonest officials for many years. We are fighting for them," he said.

Azad made every effort to downplay his long-standing personal battle with Jaitley in issues related to DDCA, but did not hesitate to say that there were at least five officials, who were protected by the former president.

"There is definite proof that false bills of around Rs 50 to 60 crore had been passed by these officials. We fought tooth and nail against it but were dismissed by the president," he said. He also played another video to show how he was brushed aside by Jaitley at the DDCA annual general meeting.

Alleging there is deep rooted corruption in the DDCA, Azad said he had the documents to prove that the association hired office and other equipment at vastly inflated prices including laptops at Rs 16,000 per day and printers at Rs 3,000 per day.

At DDCA, Bansal, who surfaced for the first time since he was suspended by his own executive committee for misappropriation of funds, said the allegation that fake companies were given contracts were totally wrong. "Only four of those 14 companies received contracts from DDCA and all were done after maintaining the right procedures. Our records show we never dealt with the other companies mentioned by Kirti Azad and Bishan Bedi," he said.

Bansal's attempt to defend the DDCA, however, received a jolt from within the association when its working president, Chetan Chauhan, virtually admitted some of the allegations were right.

"The so called expose is on the basis of our findings, which were done by the three-member committee. It was due to those findings that SP Bansal was removed," Chauhan said.
