Manchester United’s four-game winning run ended abruptly as the red devils slumped to a 1-0 defeat against a gritty Real Sociedad in the Europa League group stage.

The winning goal of the match, scored by Brais Mendez in the 59th minute, came via a controversial penalty decision. The ball, hit by former Manchester City player David Silva, seemed to have struck substitute Lizandro Martinez’s knee before bouncing off to hit his elbow. The penalty was awarded, with a VAR check confirming the referee’s call.

No music was played in the stadium around the match and both sides wore black armbands and stood for a perfectly observed minute's silence as a mark of respect.

However, Nketiah made amends by scoring the winner in the second half courtesy a wonderful cross from Marquinhos
