Calcutta, Oct. 25:
Arup Basak has replaced Soumyadeep Roy as top seed in men's singles while Mouma Das heads the pack in women's group as over 350 paddlers will vie for top honours in the Eastern India Table Tennis Championship to be held here from October 30 to November 3.
Soumyadeep, ranked number one as per mid-term clarification of the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI), had initially entered his name to participate in the tournament but the TTFI had informed that he being away to Sweden for training would not be available for the meet. This led to Arup's promotion to the top slot.
In another development, a difference of opinion between TTFI and Bengal Table Tennis Association, organisers of the meet, forced Soumyojit Sarkar, a cadet player, to take part in the sub-junior boys' singles. He was earlier eligible to participate only in men's singles, according to a ruling by TTFI executive board.
Soumyojit was debarred from participating in the cadet singles event in the Western India championship for being allegedly overaged. He has since been re-examined by government doctors in Chinsurah, who have certified him to be in the 11-12 age group.
Later in the day, BTTA, however, received from TTFI a note of consent, allowing Soumyojit to fight for title in sub-junior boys' singles. The TTFI, however, debarred Saptaparni Guha and Shinjini Mitra from vying for honours in girls' section, alleging they had produced two separate contradictory certificates in proof of their age.
Out of 40 players, seeded for the meet, 29 belong to Bengal, chairman of the tournament committee, P.C. Purkayastha told a press conference today. According to him, former national champion Poulami Ghatak, Anindita Chakraborty, M.S. Mythili, Mantu Ghosh, Bhusan Thakur, R. Rajesh, Shibaji Dutta, Subhajit Saha and N.R. Indu, have confirmed participation in the tournament.
Purakayastha said the men's champion will earn Rs 20,000, while the runners-up will get Rs 10,000. In the women's winner will be richer by Rs 15,000 while the runner-up will get Rs 7,500. There will be prize money for the champions, runner-up and semi-finalists in all other categories.
