Advani loses

lost a thriller against Scot Rhys Clark, making an exit from the £300,000 Indian Open World Ranking Snooker meet, on Tuesday. Advani lost 3-4 in the first round. 

Advani’s exit was preceded by the departure of Faisal Khan, Neeraj Kumar, Brijesh Damani, Sumit Talwar and Dharminder Lily. Aditya Mehta is the lone Indian left in the fray.

 

Indians triumph

New Delhi: India thrashed Thailand 6-0 in the women’s hockey World League round two, here on Tuesday. In the quarter finals to be played on Thursday, they will take on Singapore. Jaspreet Kaur and Rani Rampal scored a brace each, while Vandana Katariya and Amandeep Kaur completed the tally. 

 

BHA League

Calcutta: Xaverians beat Belgachia United Club 2-0, while Hockey Training Centre won by a solitary goal versus Khalsa Blues AC, in the BHA League, on Tuesday. Calcutta Parsee Club and Kolkata Union Sporting Club played out a barren draw, while Howrah Union won 1-0 over BSF South Bengal.

 

Merhi to drive

London: Spaniard Roberto Merhi will race for Manor Marussia in the opening races of the F1 season starting in Australia this week, the team announced on Tuesday.  Merhi, 23, will partner British driver Will Stevens at the recently rescued team that emerged from administration only recently.

 

Dingko on panel

New Delhi: Former Asian Games gold-medallist Dingko Singh was inducted into the selection panel of Boxing India. The 10-member panel will be headed by Gopal N Devang.

 

New chief

New Delhi: Senior IAS officer Injeti Srinivas has been appointed director general of the Sports Authority of India (SAI). A former joint secretary in the ministry of sports and youth affairs, Srinivas will take the place of Jiji Thomspon.

 

Zola fired

Milan: Gianfranco Zola was fired as coach of struggling Cagliari on Monday after 10 league games in charge, despite the club describing him as “a great man”. 

 

PCB stance

New Delhi: Insisting that security situation in Pakistan is “much better” now, the PCB chairman Shahryar Khan said they would be able to host top teams in the future. He, however, clarified that they had no plans to host such teams at present.
