Karachi: Suspended from bowling in international cricket owing to his illegal action, Saeed Ajmal has pulled out of Pakistan’s National Twenty20 domestic competition where he was supposed to represent Faisalabad Wolves.

Instead, the off-spinner will be focusing on remedial work on his action at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Lahore. Ajmal, who turns 37 next month, was suspended by the ICC back on Tuesday after being reported during the Galle Test against Sri Lanka last month and assessed by an Australian lab.

Ajmal, though, is allowed to bowl in domestic cricket.

“Saeed is going to engage in a rehabilitation program starting from Monday,' a Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) spokesman told ESPNcricinfo. “Although there is no bar on him playing domestic cricket, his name has been withdrawn from the side as he is going to undergo remedial work on his bowling action with the help of Saqlain Mushtaq, who is expected to join on September 22.”

“We have requested Saeed to come next week and hopefully, he will appear before the committee to start remedial work,” PCB chairman Shaharyar Khan said. “We had two options in his case. One was to appeal against the decision. But after the ICC rules no longer take medical evidence into account, we see slim chances in an appeal,” Shaharyar added.

Faisalabad Wolves’ interim selection committee named Ajmal in their T20 squad, but the PCB asked the team to reconsider their decision and asked Ajmal to report at the NCA on Monday. A five-member Illegal Bowling Action Committee is currently underway to chalk out a program for the remedial work.

The PCB was initially considering appealing the decision against Ajmal, but later backed down and chose to reassess the off-spinner's action. As the remedial work will be carried out without the help of biomechanics, there are suggestions that once the re-modelling is done, the PCB may send Ajmal for an unofficial assessment in a reputed laboratory before applying to the ICC for reassessment.

The NCA procured biomechanical equipment worth Rs 44 million back in 2007, but it has largely been unused. It is understood that the PCB is set to launch a project in the next six months.

Pakistan have already begun the hunt for Ajmal’s replacement for their series next month against Australia at the United Arab Emirates. Pakistan play a T20 International, three one-daysers and two Tests against Australia starting from October 5.
