• Johann Sebastian Bach - he died this month - is considered to be one of the masters of the Baroque period, which is synonymous with the insistence on tonality. The compositions of Bach - his family counted several musicians - are voluminous. But what is also noticeable about his works is their receptivity to the confluence of styles. His cantatas were thus sacred as well as secular; the maestro also enriched German styles by adopting rhythms, forms and texture from Italy and France. Among other honours, a liturgical calendar of the Episcopal Church commemorates Bach with a 'feast day'.

• CIMA is, once again, ready to honour the youthful spirit in art with its Summer Show. Hearteningly, lesser known artists will rub shoulders with stalwarts who have been redefining the idiom of modern Indian art in this exhibition featuring 44 artworks by artists from across India. From M.F. Husain, Ganesh Pyne, Jamini Roy, Madhvi Parekh (picture) and Lalu Prasad Shaw to Sumitro Basak, Jayasri Burman, Paresh Maity and Kingshuk Sarkar, the show boasts of artists ranging from the 1930s to the present times. The Summer Show will be on till August 18.
