
Bhubaneswar, April 29: The administration has drawn up a roadmap to achieve complete sanitation in the next 10 years.
According to the strategy, the authorities would work towards ensuring an open defecation-free urban area in 10 years.
The state officials have come up with the draft strategy with inputs from Delhi-based Centre for Research Policy.
"We have made a detailed plan to achieve complete sanitation in the next 10 years. The new plan stresses on use of modern technology for construction of toilets and other infrastructure," said an official of housing and urban development department.
The implementation of the new strategy would include an evolution of a framework for zero waste under the solid waste management.
An urban sanitation committee and a programme implementing unit will be constituted to assist the civic body officials achieve the goal.
The committee will have the power to approve the projects related to sanitation in the city.
Bhubaneswar mayor Ananta Narayan Jena said that all round efforts were already being made by the civic body to ensure a clean and healthy environment. "We are distributing work orders for constructing household latrines to make the city open defecation-free," he said.
Besides, the strategy aims to provide access to women and girls to have safe menstrual hygiene.
"There is an urgent need for adequate sanitation facilities in the city under smart city project. The administration should work hard to improve their rank," said Bhabagrahi Panda, a retired IAS officer.
Deputy commissioner of the municipal corporation Srimanta Mishra said that the civic body had devised a strategy to make people aware of various sanitation projects in the city.
