Violence spurs repoll at 25 places

Repoll was ordered today at 25 places after election-related violence disrupted the polling process at several places across the state yesterday.

Bhubaneswar, Feb. 16: Repoll was ordered today at 25 places after election-related violence disrupted the polling process at several places across the state yesterday.

The second phase of the panchayat elections and counting of votes was held yesterday.

Deputy secretary to the State Election Commission Azad Hind Panigrahi said fresh poll was ordered based on the reports from district collectors. The repoll will be held on February 20 and 21 at 25 polling booths from where rigging, booth capturing and snatching of ballot boxes/papers were reported yesterday.

State Election Commission officials said fresh poll would be conducted in Ganjam, Jajpur, Jharsuguda, Kendrapara, Keonjhar and Rayagada districts.

Panigrahi said adequate security arrangements had been made for the third phase of poll tomorrow.

Reports of post-poll violence continued to pour in from various places today, too. Podana village in Niali area of Cuttack district has been on the boil since a group clash leading death of a person on Tuesday. In a backlash, houses of rival groups were torched, following which armed police forces were deployed at the village.

In Chandbali of Bhadrak district, four persons were injured, one seriously, in a post-poll clash. Tension erupted in Kishore Nagar of Angul district after supporters of a victorious candidate set fire to paddy stacks belonging to a defeated candidate. Irate locals gheraoed the police station.

At Athgarh in Cuttack district, one Subash Bhoi was injured and hospitalised following a group clash. Ganeswar Kundu, son of a zilla parishad member candidate in Kendrapara district, was allegedly kidnapped, sparking tension at Patkura in Kendrapara district. Villagers staged a road blockade at Tikanpur in Patkura police limits.<>_Ganeswar Kundu was allegedly kidnapped while he was on the way to his house in Jiralo after poll campaigning. Ganeswar's mother Sabitri Kundu has been fielded by BJP as a candidate for zilla parishad zone-10.

The ward member Rama Dei had alleged that her rivals assaulted her husband, father and son. "I won the poll for ward member and the zilla parishad seat went to my rivals. While taking out a procession, my rivals abused me. When my father opposed them, they assaulted him. They also assaulted my husband and son," she alleged.

Rama Dei's father Sura Bhoi, 63, suffered severe injuries and was rushed to Municipality Hospital. "Three days have passed since the incident took place but the cops have arrested only one accused. The police are trying to hush up the matter," she alleged.

Inspector in charge of Dhauli police station Pravash Pal said: they had already registered a case in this connection. "We have been conducting raids to nab the other accused." in the case," said Pal.
