Cuttack, July 10: To reinforce discipline at Ravenshaw University, which had witnessed a group clash on Saturday night, the authorities have served a 24-hour eviction notice on all non-students staying at its hostels.
“Strict action will be taken against all non-boarders staying at various boys hostels. We have already identified 12 non-boarders staying at East Hostel and served them a notice to vacate the hostel within 24 hours. We also plan to start surprise evening raids on the varsity hostels from this evening,” said registrar Smarapriya Mishra.
Official sources said boarders would from now on be allowed to enter their respective hostels only after producing identity cards. The hostel gates will also be closed at 11pm every day, after which no student would be allowed to enter.
The decision of evicting non-student residents from the varsity hostels was taken at a meeting that was held today to discuss the recent attack on some East Hostel students.
Three major group clashes have taken place on the varsity campus in the last five months. A two-member committee has been constituted to find out the reasons behind the group clash on February 4 that had left three students injured.
Sources said the committee had recommended launching of a drive to sanitise all the boys hostels where a number of non-students were also staying. It has also suggested the formation of a students-faculty coordination committee.
On last Saturday, a Ravenshaw student had sustained injuries in an attack inside East Hostel by some outsiders. Following this, the East Hostel boarders had staged a demonstration demanding arrest of those involved in the attack.
The students had also protested against the varsity authority’s indifference towards enhancing security measures on its campus.
