Bhubaneswar, Nov. 21: Frequent traffic violations across the city may shortly be a thing of the past.

Police will have an advanced traffic-control management in the city that would include a CCTV surveillance of the traffic posts to curb violations and implement e-challan system.

As many as 43 traffic locations have been selected for installation of CCTVs across the city. This will not only reduce the manual dependence on traffic management, but also help the police in penalising the offenders.

This move was decided in a meeting today with government agencies, including officials of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation, the Bhubaneswar Development Authority, the National Highways Authority of India and the works department.

A three-member team was constituted to look after the traffic development. It will have a member each from the police, the civic body and the works department, which will co-ordinate with other agencies in traffic related works.

“The action committee would regularly monitor traffic situations and take measures during traffic congestion. Frequent discussions with other government officials would also lead to better response during crisis,” said a police official.

The officials also decided to evict encroachment on footpaths along with maintenance of those for pedestrians. Similarly, issues related to parking problem, shifting of electric poles from roads, road engineering, identification of auto parking lots and marking of zebra crossing were also discussed.

“This was a common platform to discuss several traffic related problems and it will also provide a platform to all government agencies to work in tandem to improve the traffic,” said municipal commissioner Sanjib Kumar Mishra.

On November 12, the police had convened a meeting with the service provider for introducing e-challan. The electronic form of the challan will be generated by a machine, which will also take the photograph of the violator and would be connected to the police control room. This facility will enable the offender to pay the penalty through credit and debit cards.
