Bhubaneswar, Feb. 2: A group of youngsters here have started an animal adoption campaign for street dogs.
The youngsters, under the banner Animal Welfare Trust Ekamra, have started the campaign to raise awareness about the merits of adopting a stray animal.
This first-of-its-kind adoption camp in the city was hosted at Saheed Nagar recently to encourage people to adopt an Indian pariah dog instead of buying pedigree dogs from puppy mills or pet stores. The event saw good footfall.
They brought with them one fully grown Indian Pariah, one German Spitz and four puppies, all abandoned or rescued by the team.
"We interacted with the people of Bhubaneswar to find out about their views on animal cruelty. We also showed people the bright side of being a 'parent' to an animal. Along with that, they tried to educate people on how to react when they see a wounded animal on the street," said Purabi.
She added that the initiative would help curb the threats posed by streets dogs, which has been in the news in the state recently. "Many of them have been dying in road accidents every day, in addition to cases of dog bites being reported. So, such menaces would decrease," she added. They will host similar events across the city. The animal lovers have been rescuing stray puppies and keeping them in shelters.
"Whether you are a fastidious or casual housekeeper, we will help you select a suitable canine for your lifestyle preferences," said Purabi Patra, founder of the organisation.
They also visit the houses of people interested in adoption to ensure that the dogs will be taken care of.
The initiative has drawn the attention of dog lovers. "When we choose to adopt, we not only save an animal's life but also create the space to do the same to more homeless pets," said Ananya Mohapatra, a dog owner.
The youngsters have been staging rallies to demand stricter laws against animal abuse. More than 100 animal lovers are part of the campaign. "The world is waking up to fighting animal abuse. This is a massive movement in which citizens are coming together and we want to be a part of it and raise our voices," said Patra.
The members will shortly organise awareness camps to raise protest atrocities against animals.
