Bhubaneswar, Dec. 14: The state government today cleared the smart city proposals of Bhubaneswar and Rourkela, which now await the final approval of the Centre.

The two cities have been selected for the project from among top five urban centres in the state.

"The proposals will be sent to the Centre tomorrow," said special secretary of the state urban development department S.K. Ratho.

The Bhubaneswar town centre district will be developed over 1,000 acres from Sishu Bhavan to Vani Vihar. "The smart city model will be superimposed on the existing city," said an official.

The infrastructure for the smart city will be developed with an investment of Rs 4,537 crore, out of which a grant of Rs 1,000 crore will be available from the Smart City Mission Fund. The remaining fund will be provided by the public-private partners and various government schemes.

Chief secretary Aditya Prasad Padhi stressed on the prevention of vehicular pollution and making the city schools smart.

The smart city of Rourkela will be developed over 1,241 acres from Birsa Chhak to Brahmani bridge for Rs 2,413 crore. Here too, Rs 1,000 crore will be made available from the Smart City Mission Fund. It will get Rs 924 crore from the public-private partnership and rest from other related schemes.

The main focus will be solid waste management, underground sewerage, underground power cabling, smart city lighting, Wi-Fi connectivity, rainwater harvesting and installation of CCTV cameras.

The Rourkela Steel Plant has received clearance from its corporate headquarters for installation of solid waste treatment plant in the city. The commissioning of the plant will help the city in its bid for smart city.

The treatment plant will come up over 10 acres near Tarkera Grid in public-private partnership mode. The steel plant will provide the land and other logistical support while the private players will set up the plant for disposing of the solid waste.

The plant will require nearly 300 tonnes of municipal waste every day for cleaning. The 20-crore project will take a year to complete. When the plant functions at full capacity, it will produce 2-2.5MW of power, which will be purchased by the steel plant.
