Staff crunch, but pass rate up

Ravenshaw University has recorded a 97.22 per cent success rate this year despite acute shortage of teaching and non-teaching staff in undergraduate courses.

Cuttack: Ravenshaw University has recorded a 97.22 per cent success rate this year despite acute shortage of teaching and non-teaching staff in undergraduate courses.

Vice-chancellor Ishan Patro said: "There has been a 2.57 per cent rise in pass percentage as compared to 94.65 per cent in 2017. In 2016, the pass percentage was 90.91 per cent.

"Of the 1,438 students who became graduates, 766 were girls and 672 were boys. Around 86 per cent passed in first division," Patro said.

"Saurya Nayak emerged as the university best graduate among students of regular courses securing an aggregate mark of 86.14 per cent and Aliva Das (information science and telecommunication) was the best graduate among students of professional courses with 87.96 per cent aggregate marks," the vice chancellor said.

Regular courses include subjects in Arts, science and commerce streams while the professional courses include bachelor in business administration, BSc in information science and telecommunication, BSc in information technology and management, BSc in hotel & hospitality administration and the integrated MBA.

According to the result sheet released by the controller of examinations, the pass percentage of science students was 97.45 per cent while in commerce, it was 97.25 per cent. On the other hand, 96.97 per cent Arts students cleared the examination.

The pass percentage in professional courses - BSc in IST, ITM and HHA was 97.10 per cent, 97.71 and 100 per cent respectively. The success rate in BBA and IMBA was 93.33 per cent and 100 per cent respectively.

The university has been facing acute staff crunch as the authorities have been unable to fill up 156 faculty position which are vacant for over four years now. The posts of professor (20), reader (37) and lecturer (99) are lying vacant in 18 disciplines.

University authorities said fresh advertisements inviting applications for the 156 posts would be issued shortly following the high court's direction. Advertisement inviting applications had been invalidated by the high court twice on grounds of non-adherence to University Grants Commission guidelines.
