Bhubaneswar: The state government on Tuesday said that six treatment plants would be commissioned to make Daya river pollution-free.
Daya gets polluted as the Gangua nullah, which carries the city's wastewater, flows into it.
Experts say that rivers such as Bhargavi, Luna and Ratnachira are also getting polluted because of the Daya.
Revenue and disaster management minister Maheswar Mohanty, forest and environment minister Bijoyshree Routray and panchayati raj & drinking water supply minister Pradeep Maharathy took part in the meeting that was held to find ways to combat pollution of the Daya.
Chief secretary Aditya Prasad Padhi, water resources secretary P.K. Jena, Satyabadi MLA Umakanta Samantray, urban development secretary G. Mathivathanan and senior officials of the State Pollution Control Board were also present at the meeting.
Mohanty said that the urban development department was setting up six water treatment plants to purify the polluted water of the river.
"Work on the two water treatment plants have started and tender process for the other projects are over. These projects are targeted to be completed within three years. With the commissioning of these projects, wastewater of the Gangua will be released into the Daya after proper treatment. This will make the river pollution-free," he said.
A technical will, however, examine whether the treatment plants need to be set up at the confluence point of Gangua and Daya.
Those present at the meeting also opined that increase in Daya water flow could reduce the river's pollution level.
The State Pollution Control Board has been asked to study whether the water of Daya river was polluting Bhargavi, Luna and Ratnachira. They have been asked to submit a report at the next meeting.
Once the report is ready, the government will chalk out its future course of action.
