Balasore , June 8: The Similipal wildlife sanctuary authorities have initiated measures to relocate the tribals settled in the core area of the sanctuary.
The relocation plan was formulated in 2008, but it could not be implemented so far.
There are about 146 tribal families residing mainly in three villages — Jamuna, Bakua and Kabat Khai — in the core area of the sanctuary.
The wildlife sanctuary guidelines allow no human settlement in the core area as latter’s movement and interference is likely to affect the natural environment of the wildlife habitat.
Out of the four identified villages located in the core area, around 100 families from Jenabill have been displaced and settled in two pockets - Ambudia under Udla block and Kopakand under Joshipur block .
Recently, it was decided at a high-level meeting, chaired by forest and environment minister Bijoyshree Routray, that move to relocate the tribals from the rest three villages located in the core area will start.
“The tribals are reluctant to vacate their occupied patches. However, during the closure period of sanctuary in monsoon season, we will concentrate on shifting the tribals,” said regional chief conservator of forests Anup Nayak.
Under the rehabilitation package Rs 10 lakh is given to each displaced family. A person above 18 years is considered as one family unit. The rehabilitation package also has an option of getting a house, agricultural land and other facilities. A family either can opt for cash or seek house, agriculture land and other facilities.
